Today's blustery Slalom race at Mt. Hood Meadows was the final event for this year's Buddy Werner team selection.  The wind was brutal much of the time and the temperature was very cold, yet our young racers continued to push out of the start gate, and everyone one of them tried their best to ski fast!  We are proud of all MHRT athletes!

Congratulations to the seven boys and seven girls who will represent Mt. Hood Race Team at the 2011 Buddy Werner Championship!

Boys Team: Cooper Lawhead, Jay Raitt, Luke Greenslade, Luke Musgrave, Nathan Gunesch, Wesley Georgiev and Zach Simmons.

Girls Team: Abby Grebisz, Anabela Splitstoser, Ashley Lodmell, Cailin Gahan, Graeson Fish, Oriana Galasso and Teagan Estell.

In two weeks this group of athletes will be competing in Slalom and Giant Slalom races as part of the BWC.  This year's event will be hosted at Stevens Pass, WA.  Good luck to all our BWC competitors!

And good luck to all MHRT racers as we move into the final month of the racing season!

It’s time to get ready for the Ski-A-Thon Challenge, and start collecting pledges from family, friends and neighbors.  We have some really cool prizes this year like iPods, gift cards and ski racing swag!  FIS racers who are away that weekend can still collect pledges and have a substitute ski your laps (like mom or dad).  Don’t worry; we won’t make them run courses!

Please see the attached info sheet and pledge sheet.

The final week before the holidays has come to an end, and our athletes and coaches have been very busy with training, travel and racing. The first month of winter kicked off a very exciting and successful start to the racing season, and the great snow conditions promise many good skiing and racing weeks ahead! It's cold on the mountain and more snow is in the forecast for the holidays!

Mt. Hood Race Team's training began with the J4/J5 Thanksgiving camp. We were fortunate to have great snow and already skiing at Mt. Hood Skibowl. We have had great participation during the early weeks, and there are many young racers in our Learn to Race program that should be joining the team.    Even though some wet weather came to the mountain in mid-December, the kids have been enthusiastic and the training has been very good.

The J4/J5 early season camp in Canada was canceled due to a late opening at the Apex Mountain Resort. However, Rich, Bill and the athletes conducted a mini camp on Mt. Hood and enjoyed all the new snow and winter weather at Timberline. The camp was a great jump-start to the season!

Mt. Hood Academy / HEAT athletes and coaches have had a great start to the season. Fifteen athletes joined Roger and Jim for a successful early season training camp at Panorama, BC. After the camp, two athletes, Kirsten and Mac, stayed in Canada to compete at Lake Louise in NorAm speed events.    It was rough, wild and fast, and they did a great job!

Many other MHA/HEAT athletes have also been competing. Austin, Danny and Max raced at Jackson Hole in 4 days of FIS racing. And Keree, Kirsten, Ali and Haley, along with Austin and Mac have returned to Canada for FIS SL and GS races. Many more MHA/HEAT athletes competed this weekend in the first PNSA event of the season, racing GS at Mt. Bachelor. There were many great results and several podiums, including Kyla Miller's win both days! Congratulations to all our Junior athletes and good luck at upcoming events!!

Finally, it is very exciting to report that Mt. Hood Academy successfully hosted a re- accreditation visit from the Northwest Accreditation Commission. The visiting team of school administrators was "very impressed with the quality of education" and the "creative balance of academics and athletics". Last week, the NWAC granted Mt. Hood Academy "full" academic accreditation! The re-accreditation process involved a year of self-study and evaluation. Congratulations to Mary and her teachers for a fantastic job!
The early season success of our students, athletes and our programs is very exciting.

Here is an update of the events and activities coming up during the holiday season.

Happy Thanksgiving! Have a fun and safe holiday weekend!

Skibowl will open for the winter on Friday! Over 2 feet of snow fell on Monday, and it snowed more on Tuesday! The temperature has stayed very cold and the snow is great. Skibowl has groomed the Canyon, Reynolds Run top to bottom, and all of Lower Bowl and Multorpor. All lifts will be operating by Saturday.

Winter arrived and Skibowl will open just in time for our Thanksgiving Camp!
Here is an update for the next few weeks, and some important dates for your calendar:

    Thanksgiving Camp
All MHA Juniors and MHRT J4/J5 athletes will be skiing with the coaches Friday, Saturday and Sunday for Thanksgiving Camp. Skiing should be fun at Skibowl! While there is a lot of snow, the area still does not have a base layer, so some stumps and rocks may still be under the service. Be careful, and bring trainers or rock skis. Twin-tips are fine, but please bring training ski, too. MHRT J4/J5 athletes will meet coaches each day at the Multorpor Lodge by 9:00am. MHA Juniors will meet coaches at the Multorpor Lodge by 9:00am on Friday, and by 8:30am on Saturday and Sunday.

MHRT J6 and Learn to Race Programs
J6 racers and the Learn to Race participants will begin their programs on Saturday, December 4th. We should be skiing at Skibowl and meeting at the Multorpor Lodge. Make sure you have your season pass or lift ticket, and please make sure that your ski bindings and boots operate properly. Another announcement will be sent next week. Check the team website,, or call the Racer Message phone, 503-272-0109, for more information.

    J3 Team Calendar/Planning Meeting - 11/27
After skiing on Saturday, the 27th, J3 athletes and their parents will meet with Mary and the coaches for a planning meeting, review the race calendar for this year, and discuss race entry and race travel. The meeting is scheduled for 3:00pm, but be sure to check with the coaches on Saturday for any change. Everyone should plan on meeting, however, if you cannot attend please send Mary an email at so she can get you the information.

    J1/J2 Team Calendar/Planning Meeting - 12/4
All part-time J1/J2 athletes and parents will meet with the coaches after training on Saturday, December 4th, at MHA. We will discuss the race calendar and race travel plans. In the mean time, everyone should send in their entry for the Russ Read GS at Mt. Bachelor.

Russ Read GS, Mt. Bachelor, December 18th & 19th
The first race of the season for most MHA Juniors will be the Russ Read GS at Mt. Bachelor on the 18th and 19th. The deadline is December 4th, so please send your entry. The team is staying at the Ameritel Inn in Bend. You will be able to discuss the event with the coaches at your planning meeting, and cancel your entry at that time if appropriate. Please go to race announcement for more information.

    MHRT Parents Meeting - Change
Our annual MHRT parents meeting during the Holiday Camp will be Wednesday, December 29th, right after training in the Multorpor Lodge. This is a change from earlier calendars. This meeting is a great time for new families to meet with the coaches, ask questions and discuss plans for the coming season. This is also a great time for experienced racing families to share their knowledge and "tricks" with new racing families. Please change your calendar and plan to join us on the 29th.
More team information will be available in the coming weeks. But for now, winter has arrived, Skibowl is open, and we're excited to ski!!
    See you on the mountain!

    Here comes the snow!!

  • October 29, 2010 12:55 PM | Anonymous

The first winter snow fell this week on the mountain, with close to a foot of snow in Government Camp and over 3 feet of snow at Timberline!  The ski season will soon be here and before we know it the kids will be racing!

In preparation for the racing events our team will host this winter, we are having an informational meeting for all those interested in learning more about racing.  Hosting a quality ski race requires many volunteers doing many different jobs.  There are plenty of tasks for parents, both on and off the hill.  Please join us this coming Wednesday.

    MHSEF Race Committee Meeting

    Wednesday, November 3rd at 6:30pm

    Elmer's Restaurant

16087 SE 82nd Drive, Clackamas, OR

(just East of I-205 off Hwy 224)

    Race Officials

Those of you who currently hold an officials license will be able to fulfill your Officials Update requirement at our Committee Meeting on Wednesday.  For those of you who may be interested in becoming a licensed official this meeting will cover the information needed prior to attending the PNSA Officials Clinic.

The PNSA Officials Clinic in Portland is scheduled for Sunday, November 14th at the Multnomah Athletic Club.  Please go to the PNSA website for detailed information and registration - Registration and Information All clinics begin at 8:15 AM - registration opens at 7:30 AM

Every event we host requires licensed officials handling many different duties, so we are always looking for more parents interested in this area of racing.  However, even if you are not interested in becoming a licensed official, the Officials Clinic is still a great opportunity to learn more about the sport and meet other parents of Mt. Hood racers.  The more you know, the more you will enjoy your child's experience in ski racing.

If you have any questions about the Race Committee Meeting or the PNSA Officials Clinic please send an email to Malcolm Ash -, or Bill Gunesch -

Hope to see you on Wednesday!
